Takeout recs, virtual wine tastings, meal kits to try, and other local dining-at-home intel from Eater Atlanta’s editor and reporters

It’s hard to see the toll that COVID-19 is taking on our restaurant industry, but at the same time, it’s amazing how resilient and creative its members are. These past few weeks I’ve seen restaurants and coffee shops really lean into takeout-only models, and embrace all the extra legwork that comes with it. For instance, Rev Coffee in Smyrna, has nearly perfected the online ordering system and prepares everything for you — including pouring cream into your coffee and not allowing people to do it themselves. Last weekend, I ordered takeout from Umi. You call in the order (phones open at 3 p.m.) and pay over the phone. The food is delivered curbside at the valet. It’s splurgy. Rolls run between $12 and $28, but it’s Umi sushi, so it’s incredibly well executed, even as takeout. The “New Page” roll, filled with shrimp tempura and topped with thinly sliced lemon and salmon, is my absolute favorite, and being able to order it was a comfort. I also recently went to Southern Custard in Brookhaven for the chunky peanut butter cup custard. The shop cut its hours to evenings, and is only selling pints, half pints, and pies. Only one party is allowed in the shop at a time, with people waiting spaced six feet apart. I really appreciated that. — Lia Picard, Eater Atlanta contributor
